Blast From The Past

Have people been living under a rock? What is going on?

The past couple of weeks, I have been noticing that many of the "top blogs" I subscribe to on Google Reader are telling me information I already know, i.e. that Twitter is the hot new thing, that Scoble has a lot of friends, etc.

Well now it seems to be getting a little bit out of contol.

Chris Pirillo recently did a video about whether or not bloggers are the new journalists. As far as I'm concerned, this question has been asked, re-asked, and asked again since 2002. There is still no clear answer.

But Chris isn't the only one. Take Crave, CNET's blog about gadgets and other cool stuff. Today they wrote a post about Firefox's music add-on Foxy Tunes. But that has been around for at least 9 months. Maybe more.

Allen Stern of Center Networks wrote about Twitter hash tags, tags that allow you to search tweets about certain topics like #breakfast or #facebook. Much like the tags on a blog post. But these aren't new either!

Last, but not least, Gawker took the cake when they JUST REALIZED that Hugh Grant's fictional occupation as a travel bookstore owner in the 9 year old romantic comedy Notting Hill wouldn't really make sense in real life!

I know that I make the mistake ALL the time of discovering things too late. I admit it. But it's somewhat disconcerting when the people I turn to for news and the latest info are telling me something I already know :(

*Update: One post or video out of hundreds of noteworthy posts and videos is not a good enough for me to get over-hyped. I love Chris, Allen, and yes, even Gawker. I guess as a reader and a fan I tend to expect the best. Which is selfish. My bad.

Heh heh. Someone is fired up this morning eh?

All good points though. You have to remember that not everyone lives on the bleeding edge like some of us do. :-P The more "mainstream" the media, the longer it takes them to notice what is already old to us.

I kinda like it that way. Makes me feel speshul. *lol*

I heard about this thing called Y2K. Sounds like a big deal; better stock up on water and canned goods. I'm just saying.

Great post! I always privately complain when journalists/bloggers rehash old stories. Thanks for taking the time to call people out. Doing so encourages everyone to suck a little less.

You just became my #1 favorite blogger. Thanks for not just being some fluffy cute girl. Let's see more policing of the blogosphere.

I try to always bring you new, but sometimes it's good to discuss important topics as well that might be older. Why? Because while for some readers (aka you and the other early adopters) might already know about it/them, the majority don't. I am not sure that CN is CNN in terms of always only the latest breaking news.

With that said, I appreciate the feedback and am glad you enjoy CN - I enjoy your site as well - it's one of my daily reads!

Allen... you're so right. I am sorry I picked on you. I didn't realize until later how hastily I wrote my blog post and I did mention that I make the mistake ALL the time so it was a bit hypocritical of me to say the things I said.

I am young and naive. And I know it.

But with that said, it shows that I read your blog daily as well!

:)
