CosmoGirl has folded.
It's kind of sad... but then (ironically) look at how Portfolio broke the news -- by blogging about it and later on making changes and updates with strikethroughs.
Precisely what can't be done on print.
Precisely the reason why magazines, though beautiful and lovely-smelling, are obsolete. I am not happy about this truth. I love magazines. I still would like to write for one and I still enjoy buying & reading them and I still love ripping out pictures to create collages on my bedroom wall.
Sigh.

Print is Dying

I'm no sure this is a bad thing. To some degree, this is exactly what industries need to innovate and shed the excess pounds. It sucks because there is job loss (my job was one of the ones lost) but just like what's going on in the tech industry it's cutting fat and reducing bloat. If the people who were at this magazine who are losing their jobs know business, they'll start something new and innovative, find work elsewhere or be forced out of the industry that refused to change until it was so late in the game that there were no other options.
I don't think print will ever die completely. Sure, some, if not most magazines will become digital, if not disappear all together, but people enjoy the comfort of being able to snuggle up with a good book. I don't think print will ever be dead, and this is probably just a step in it's evolution.
besides, if it does...i'm screwed...lol
Print media is definitely on the way out. Since this "new-fangled thing called the internet" showed up, all the old executives have no idea where to head. That is why younger people like us have to take the charge and come up with the next wave of media. Right now we all see the internet the leader but who knows what new tech we will have in 50 or 100 years.
I really see what you mean, Alana. I come from a time and place before the computer and all we had was books, newspapers and magazines.
It's sad to see the giants go sometimes. But, it's nice to see that a young writer like you care for a dying industry and still see all the opportunities in them we did.
It's refreshing to read an article by someone who has respect for those that trail blazed before them.
