Federal Tax Increase on Alcohol

Legislators are considering increasing taxes on your favorite beverage alcohol products. Doing so would have a direct negative impact on hundreds, if not thousands of consumers, employees and businesses in your state. Raising taxes on consumer products right now is irresponsible and punishes us at a time when we can least afford it.

1. Spirits, wine and beer are among the most heavily taxed consumer goods in the United States. Taxing them further will cause long-term damage to our hospitality industry – the restaurants, hotels and bars that are the backbone of many communities - and will overburden adult consumers like me who enjoy these products responsibly.

2. Supplementing the government’s budget shortfalls by forcing millions of adults who enjoy a drink every now and then to pay higher taxes simply is not fair. Alcohol taxes are regressive in nature and the government should not try to balance its budget on the backs of those that can least afford these kinds of taxes.

3. As the second largest industry in the United States, the hospitality industry is dominated by small businesses and provides opportunities for first-time job seekers as well as minority entrepreneurs and managers. This group – many of whom are least able to afford an increased tax burden – would be hit hardest by a tax increase.

4. Tax increases on alcohol will put thousands of workers out of jobs. The last time federal excise taxes were raised, nearly 98,000 jobs and $1.3 billion in wages in the distilled spirits industry were lost.

This is needed...........and here's why.....

At this time, there are currently 5 severe permenant health afflictions, solely caused from Alcohol consumption, in what many of us thought was moderation.
They are & in no particular order:
-Grand Mal Seizures
-Rapidly Progressive Blindness
-Rapidly Progressive Deafness
-Rapidly Corroded Livers
-Heart Attacks
None with any forewarning signs, nor cures.

Recent survey done in all USA Univeristy's revealed that 7.3Million of our youth admit to drinking alcohol daily. Just think what the truth would be.

If this can be reduced somewhat even, just by having a tax increase......all the more reason to do it !

Sheila,

Is it the governments position to choose what is 'right' to tax and what isn't?

By all means internet or tv addiction is a cause for just as many health problems as alcohol, yet there is no taxes on those.

My opinion? The government needs to choose whether they want to tax our income or our spending, because raising both is going to put such a tax burden on society that this country cannot support. And its coming. Very, very soon.

I live in the south where politicians try to put their self-rightous beliefs on others (cannot gamble, play poker, some dry countries, no alcohol sales on Sunday) and it makes no sense.

Sin taxes are just a great example of how about 500 people in Washington believe others should live their lives.
