I'm Gonna Be a Copycat

One of my favorite bloggers, Jessica Chu, recently asked her readers to give her advice on being 21. Since I thought it was such a cool idea... and I recently turned 21 too....  I'm gonna ask the exact same thing. (Hope you don't mind, Jess!)

Now that I'm 21... I want to hear your words of wisdom.

To all my 21+ readers,

Send me anything that you’ve wished you knew when you were 21 to me at alanatay@gmail.com. Whether it be “always wear sunscreen” to “every guy you meet won’t be your boyfriend.” Anything fun/serious/whatever.

I will post my favorite ones!

Haven't been on your site in a while but had to chime in with regards to sage advice from someone not-too-much-older than yourself.

(in no particular order)

• take care of your skin and feet. You don't want to look 35 at 27.
• after you leave school, making and maintaining friends become extremely difficult
• after you leave school, dating and meeting potential lovers becomes damn near impossible.
• shyness will get you absolutely no where. Do everything you can to be outgoing.
• You're not better than anyone. In fact, most of the "nerds" are probably really interesting. At least worth 2 minutes conversation.
• Everything you ever thought/wore/said/wrote/made will become completely absurd very quickly. If it doesn't appear that way, you're doing something wrong.
• Money isn't everything, but damn, it sure is nice to have.
• Listen to stories, but ignore anything that begins "this one time, I was so drunk ...". Never begin a story that way. No one is impressed.
• Stop saying "dude"
• Take many photos, you will cherish the memories very quickly
• Don't take too many self portraits, you'll wonder why you were so vain
• Most social situations will be centered around food; learn to love it.
• Read every book you hear mentioned. Someone will ask you sooner or later.
• There are still plenty of good men in the world. Chances are they're the shy ones. Go start a conversation.
• The network is the only thing that matters. Give as much, if not more, than you receive.
• Everything you learn in college is for your own personal benefit. No one gives a crap about your thesis, your classes, or even your grades.
• Do everything you can to get a good first job. That doesn't mean high paying, it means something you can enjoy for more than ten minutes
• Try not to live in the past. Some people are better at this than others.
